The state of Virginia is conducting a long-term study into the possibility of reincarnation. To do this they are investigating children from all over the world who have reported living a previous life. They get as many details from these children as they can and then try to verify those that are facts that the child would have no way of knowing. In most cases the children stop having these memories around the age of 4 when their sense of self becomes solidified.

Question - Could a reverse study be done with Alzheimers patients? These patients lose their most recent memories first and gradually regress to the point where they only remember their childhood memories. When they’ve mentally reached their memories of being 4 can we start looking for evidence of the memories from a previous life in the stories they tell?

Etiquette for the Afterlife

How to fit in when you're dead.

The idea here is to write a self-help book for people who know they're going to die in the near future, or who've made enough enemies that the possibilities are rapidly increasing. The book would contain the kind of helpful advice you'd need to succeed wherever you wound up. For instance, if you find yourself in heaven:

1. It's a good idea to emulate Christ. Like him, you should quickly obtain a symbol of the cause of your death and wear it on a necklace (a little cancerous lung, wrecked car, bottle of gin, etc.).

2. Never ask to read the Book of Life. Since it contains everything that happened during your life it's bound to be obscene. And so on...

Benign Possessions

Temporary reincarnations

Pictures of brain scans taken while people are meditating show a gradual loss of activity around the lobes that are thought responsible for one's sense of self ("I"). The meditators report a feeling of oneness with the universe as their trance deepens and the activity in those areas decreases. This made me wonder if we might have stumbled on an alternate theory of reincarnation.

The theory as it stands now says we come back to this life after living a previous life.  Some evidence of this is provided by children recalling events in past lives that are too detailed to be explained away as the result of an overactive imagination.  What if the memories aren't their's though?  What if their minds are in a natural state of oneness until they've had enough experiences to develop a sense of self? The spirits of the departed might be able to take advantage of that state of mind to convey their own memories through children.  In a sense, it would be a form of channeling. This assumes a couple of things of course.  First, that our souls live on after we die, and second, that the souls remain aware of their own identity while they exist on the continuum of existence experienced as "oneness."  As for why they'd bother expressing their memories through children - they might be doing it in an effort to prove to those they loved who are still alive that there is life after death in an effort to comfort them. I know I'd do it if given the chance.

21 Grams

If poor science can be turned into good science we have a solution. The experiments done in 1907 that came to the conclusion that the soul weighed 21 grams were considered good, or at least okay, science at the time, although they're obviously not up to today's standards. We should redo the experiment to find out of if the soul really does have a weight. If it doesn't, we can relegate this to the urban myth category. If it does though, then we have an answer that should satisfy both the pro-life and pro-choice camps - life begins when the 21 grams shows up.

Multi-Dimensional Science offers the possibility of scientifically "proving" the "reality" of non-physical psychic, or spiritual dimensions of existence.
